Located in the central north, Lombardy is one of Italy’s largest and most populous regions. It is home to a handful of popular and well-known wine styles including the bright, cherry-scented Valtellina and the high-quality sparkling wine of Franciacorta with notes of forest berry, almond, and brioche. Oltrepo Pavese Metodo Classico and rosé wines are other well-known styles in areas around Lake Garda. This is just the start.
The 13 Regions
Lombardy holds 5 DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) and 21 DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) titles, as well as 15 IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica, which celebrates individual localities) classifications across 13 winemaking zones. (Source: MasterClass) Some examples of the 13 sub-regions producing wine are Valtellina, Franciacorta, Garda Bresciano, Botticino, and Valcelepio. Some of the more well known appellations in Lombardy wine region are Valtellina DOC, Oltrepò Pavese DOC, and Terre di Franciacorta DOC. (Source: Wine Tourism)
The western and southern shores of Lake Garda, Franciacorta between Bergamo and Brescia, and Valtellina, the valley of the Adda river on the border with Switzerland, where Nebbiolo has been cultivated since ancient times, are the most suitable for viticulture. However, you can discover less popular but high quality wines such as Lugana and Garda, Vini Mantovani, Botticino, Moscato di Scanzo and Valcalepio. (Source: Wine Tourism)
According to Ascovilo, in Italy about 70% of the wine production is DOP / IGP certified, in Lombardy, the percentage exceeds 90%. Ascovilo is the umbrella association representing 13 different winery associations in Lombardy and just so happens to be a sponsor of the 2022 Wine Media Conference and is organizing pre-and post-conference excursions around the area created specifically for our wine-loving attendees. This means your experience with area wines and vintners will be broad and rich! Even if you’ve traveled to Lombardy before, you haven’t done it in the Wine Media Conference style.
